| Cordoba's municipal area comprises an area of mountain ranges
in the north, many of which belong to Sierra de Hornachuelos
Natural Park, the province's largest protected area. This
is of immense scenic value, with its cork oak groves and undergrowth,
as well as riverside willows, ashes and alders, not to mention
its wealth of fauna and game. More countryside is to be found
in the south, consisting mainly of fertile plains. The River
Guadalquivir flows through the city and is an integral part
of both its daily life and its history. It was declared a
part of Humanity's Heritage in 1994, with art and history
to be found in every alleyway, patio and square. The area
has many places of immense interest, such as the ruins of
Medina Azahara, a former palace city, St. Jerome of Valparaíso
Monastery and Chapels, located among mountain peaks and an
ideal place to relax. All of this, plus other attractions
such as excellent facilities and delicious cuisine. |

Puente Genil located in the south
east of the province, on the border with the province
of Seville. Its municipal area, through which the River
Genil flows, features two types of landscape, the countryside,
with its olive groves and vines and the plains, with
the market gardens where the quinces for which the town
is famous are grown. Two natural areas of interest lie
within its boundaries, Tiscar Lagoon, declared a Nature
Reserve, and Cordobilla Reservoir Beauty Spot. Both
are part of the wet zones of the south Cordoba, which
are of great importance in terms of the bird life which
congregates within them. The town is the result of the
1834 unification of two villages separated by the river
Miragenil, which once belonged to Seville. Puente Genil
is therefore linked to the river, to which it owes its
very existence. Most of the town is built on the river
banks and consists of noble houses and traditional,
well preserved dwellings which stretch as far as the
modern districts located in the upper part of the town. |

important towns. Located atop a low hill, its white
houses, the remains of its castle, its stately homes
